Frequently Asked QuestionsThoughtful Answers to Common Questions About Cosmetic Dentistry

Choosing cosmetic dentistry is a personal decision. Many patients arrive with questions – some practical, some emotional. Below are clear, honest answers to the topics we discuss most often with our New York City patients. If your question isn’t answered here, we’re always happy to talk

About Porcelain Veneers

What makes porcelain veneers look natural?

Natural-looking veneers depend on proportion, texture, translucency, and restraint. Overly white shades and uniform shapes tend to look artificial. Dr. Michael Kosdon designs veneers to blend with your facial features and surrounding teeth so the result feels believable, not obvious.

Are porcelain veneers permanent?

Porcelain veneers are considered a permanent treatment because some enamel modification is usually required. That’s why planning and clarity before commitment are essential. Dr. Kosdon takes a conservative approach whenever possible and discusses alternatives if veneers may not be the best option.

How much tooth structure is removed for veneers?

The amount varies by case. Some veneers require minimal preparation, while others require more adjustment due to wear, damage, or alignment concerns. Preserving healthy enamel is always a priority, and recommendations are made based on long-term outcomes rather than convenience.

How many veneers do I need?

There is no standard number. Some patients benefit from a few veneers, while others require more to achieve balance and proportion. During your consultation, Dr. Kosdon will explain how the number of veneers can affect the smile’s overall quality.

Do veneers look fake over time?

Veneers tend to look artificial when they are overdone or poorly planned. When designed thoughtfully and maintained properly, high-quality porcelain veneers can age very well. Material choice, shape, and shade selection all play a role in longevity and realism.

The Try Smile / Trial Smile

What is a Try Smile?

The Try Smile is Dr. Kosdon’s structured smile preview experience. Designed to support confident decision-making, it allows patients to see and feel the proposed direction of their smile before committing to porcelain veneers.

Is a Try Smile the same as a trial smile?

“Trial smile” is a general term used to describe previewing cosmetic changes. The Try Smile is Dr. Kosdon’s specific approach, guided by his philosophy of restraint and proportion.

Do I have to do a Try Smile?

No. A Try Smile is optional. Some patients feel comfortable moving forward without a preview, while others find it extremely helpful. Dr. Kosdon will discuss whether it makes sense for your situation.

What if I don’t like the Try Smile?

That’s exactly why it exists. If something doesn’t feel right, adjustments can be discussed or treatment can be paused altogether. There is no obligation to proceed.

The Consultation

What happens during a cosmetic consultation?

The consultation is a conversation, not a commitment. Dr. Kosdon will listen to your goals, examine your oral health, evaluate your smile, and discuss all possible options. Many patients leave with clarity – even if they don’t make a decision that day.

Do I have to decide on treatment during my consultation?

No. You are never pressured to decide on the spot. Cosmetic decisions deserve time, and patients are encouraged to move forward only when they feel comfortable and informed.

Can I start with a virtual consultation?

Yes. Virtual consultations are available for patients who want an initial conversation before coming into the office. In-person visits are required for detailed evaluation and planning.

What if I’m not sure veneers are right for me?

That’s common. Dr. Kosdon will discuss alternatives when appropriate and help you decide whether veneers or another treatment may best suit your unique needs.

Cost & Planning Philosophy

Why don’t you list veneer prices online?

Veneer fees vary based on design, materials, the complexity of the case, and other factors. Providing numbers without context can be misleading. Dr. Kosdon believes it’s more helpful to discuss cost after understanding your goals and anatomy.

Can I get a price range before coming in?

General ranges can sometimes be discussed, but meaningful pricing requires an evaluation. This can help ensure that recommendations are appropriate and aligned with your goals, not generic.

What factors affect the cost of veneers?

Factors include the number of veneers, material selection, preparation required, and overall treatment complexity. Long-term planning and durability are always considered alongside aesthetics.

Do you offer financing?

Financing options may be available. These can be discussed once a treatment plan has been outlined.

Anxiety, Comfort & Confidence

I’m nervous about cosmetic dentistry. Is that normal?

Very normal. Many patients feel anxious about making permanent changes. Dr. Kosdon’s approach emphasizes open communication to help patients feel at ease.

What if I don’t like the final result?

Concerns are addressed early through planning and, when appropriate, previewing the direction before committing. The goal is to minimize surprises and help patients feel confident every step of the way.

I’ve had a bad dental experience before. Can you help?

Yes. Many patients come to Dr. Kosdon after feeling rushed or uncomfortable elsewhere. Care is approached patiently, with respect for prior experiences and concerns.

Veneer Redesign & Second Opinions

I already have veneers. Can they be improved?

Often, yes. Veneers may be redesigned if they appear bulky or artificial, or if they no longer fit comfortably. Dr. Kosdon evaluates whether adjustment, replacement, observation, or another course of action may be the best approach.

Why do some veneers look bulky or unnatural?

This is often related to planning, shape, or material choice rather than veneers themselves. Thoughtful redesign can significantly improve comfort and appearance.

Should I replace older veneers?

That depends on their condition. Replacement is not always necessary, and recommendations are made conservatively.
