Home/Blog / Case Study: Porcelain Veneers and “Professionalization”

Porcelain VeneersIn our last blog post, we discussed the effect a smile can have on both your confidence and your career. In this installment, we will take a closer look at one individual who used porcelain veneers to look and feel more professional in the workplace.

I recently worked on someone who had served in the Army in Korea. When he came into my office, he had a very childish looking smile – a smile that shows a lot of gum tissue –and his teeth were a little bit crooked and yellow. Though he didn’t feel like his smile affected his confidence, he said he just didn’t feel like a professional. He felt that employers and coworkers didn’t take him as seriously as someone with a nicer smile. His case is a fairly common one, and today’s technologies and procedures allow a lot of these problems to be fixed non-invasively. Patients with issues such as his can easily enhance their smile with cosmetic dentistry procedures, such as gum reshaping or teeth whitening – but one of the fastest ways to make a change is with porcelain veneers. I feel that cosmetic dentistry procedures such as veneers can help give individuals a winning smile that can really give them an edge in this very competitive job market we are in right now.

The initial step to achieving a smile that instills confidence in one’s self and in a potential employer is a consultation. Because the condition of each patient’s smile varies so widely, each smile has its own unique situation – and oftentimes the solution is not as expensive or complicated as many people think. Porcelain veneers can provide a long-lasting solution because the color of the veneers is stable. With orthodontics such as Invisalign®, you have to wear retainers, and there is always a chance that the teeth will move back. Veneers are very low maintenance, very natural-looking, and can correct a lot of problems, including crooked teeth, discolored teeth, chipped and broken teeth, or even teeth with old bonding from a childhood injury.

People who are self-conscious about dental concerns that affect their appearance often teach themselves to smile differently or hold their hand in front of their mouth to hide whatever is bothering them. They try not to smile or laugh because they are embarrassed, but life is really too short to continually deal with those issues when you can fix these concerns with a relatively painless procedure. You can emerge with a smile that really makes you shine and look like a confident professional. In addition, while body enhancing methods such as plastic surgery or rigorous exercise routines take months to see the final results, porcelain veneers can quickly make a dramatic impact on your appearance with very long-lasting results.
